On the morning of February 20, Professor Yao Xin, Vice President of Lingnan University and a renowned expert in the field of international evolutionary computation, was invited to deliver a special lecture titled "When Evolutionary Computation Meets Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence" to faculty and students at our university. The lecture attracted nearly 200 participants from the School of Computer Science and Information Engineering, School of Software, School of Economics, School of Architecture and Art, and School of Mathematics. The event was marked by a lively atmosphere and a strong academic vibe.

During the lecture, Professor Yao Xin provided an accessible and in-depth discussion on the interrelationship between trust and credibility, as well as the attributes and requirements of trustworthy systems. He illustrated the concept of trustworthy artificial intelligence with vivid examples, explaining what it is and why it matters. Professor Yao particularly emphasized the significant role of multi-objective evolutionary learning in achieving fairer machine learning. He introduced a method that uses multi-objective evolutionary learning algorithms to simultaneously optimize model accuracy and multiple fairness metrics. Additionally, he explored multi-objective feature attribution explanations in explainable artificial intelligence, offering valuable academic insights and directions for thought to the audience.

Following the lecture, Professor Yao Xin engaged in active interaction with the attendees, answering questions about graduate education at Lingnan University. This exchange deepened the academic and research collaboration between Hefei University of Technology and Lingnan University in the field of artificial intelligence, setting a solid foundation for further cooperation.

Professor Yao Xin is the Vice President (Research and Innovation) at Lingnan University and the Tang Tian Shen Chair Professor of Machine Learning. His primary research interests include evolutionary computation, machine learning, and nature-inspired artificial intelligence. His research has been recognized with numerous awards, including the 2001 IEEE Donald G. Fink Prize Paper Award, the 2010, 2016, and 2017 IEEE Transactions on Evolutionary Computation Outstanding Paper Awards, and the 2011 IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks Outstanding Paper Award. He was elected as an IEEE Fellow in 2003, received the Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award in 2012, the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society Evolutionary Computation Pioneer Award in 2013 (the first Chinese recipient), and the IEEE Frank Rosenblatt Award in 2020 (also the first Chinese recipient). Professor Yao served as the Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Transactions on Evolutionary Computation from 2003 to 2008 and as the President of the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society from 2014 to 2015. Since 2021, he has been consistently listed among the top 2% of scientists globally by Stanford University and was named a Highly Cited Researcher in 2022 and 2023. He was also elected as a Fellow of the Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Sciences in 2024. His publications have been cited over 76,000 times on Google Scholar, with an H-index of 126. Professor Yao Xin entered the first class of the Special Class for the Gifted Young at the University of Science and Technology of China in March 1978, earned his bachelor's degree from the Department of Computer Science at USTC in 1982, his master's degree from the North China Computing Technology Research Institute in 1985, and his Ph.D. from the Department of Computer Science at USTC in 1990. He has since held academic positions in Australia, the UK, and China.
